Used Semi Truck Buying Checklist
A printable-style checklist covering paperwork, engine, drivetrain, frame, tires, brakes and cab before you buy a used tractor.
Paperwork first
Start with the documents. Confirm the title status and that the VIN on the title matches the truck. Ask for maintenance and repair records, and check that the engine, transmission and drivetrain shown on the listing match what is actually on the truck.
Gaps in service history are not always deal-breakers, but they should change how closely you inspect everything else.
Engine and drivetrain
Look for oil, coolant and fuel leaks, listen for unusual noises on a cold start, and watch for excessive smoke. Ask whether major components have been rebuilt or replaced and when. On the test drive, check that the transmission shifts cleanly through every gear and that the clutch, if manual, engages smoothly.
Inspect differentials and driveshafts for leaks and play in the U-joints. Compare mileage with the service history: documented maintenance often tells you more than the odometer.
Frame, suspension, tires and brakes
Walk the frame rails and crossmembers looking for cracks, welds, bends or heavy rust. Check air bags, shocks and spring hangers. Uneven tire wear can point to alignment or suspension problems, and tread depth tells you how soon you will be buying tires.
Check brake linings and drums, and listen for air leaks with the system charged. Our winter-ready frame rust inspection guide goes deeper on undercarriage checks.
Cab, electronics and the final decision
Test every gauge, light, the HVAC system and any sleeper amenities. Check for warning lights and ask whether diagnostic codes have been read recently. Look at seats, bunk and floor for signs of water leaks.
If you cannot inspect in person, request a walk-around video or a third-party inspection. Bluway units are inspected and serviced before they are listed, and our team will answer questions on any unit before you commit.
Key takeaways
- Verify title, VIN and maintenance records before anything else.
- Check for leaks, smoke, clean shifting and drivetrain play.
- Walk the frame, inspect suspension, tires and brakes.
- Test every cab system and read diagnostic codes.
Frequently asked questions
